About the Event
Sail2Change & Clinton Street Theater are teaming up to show you the cult classic "Brazil." A film which has made several greatest-of-all-time movie lists and is here for your viewing pleasure October 14th, just in time to raise your hairs for Halloween season. Admission is free plus a donation to a great local nonprofit working for Portland youth. Come have a drink and some popcorn, perhaps in your pre-Halloween garb, as you give back to the community!
Based on George Orwell's book 1984, Brazil is a sight to see, having been nominated at the Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay (by Monty Python, Terry Gilliam) and Best Art Direction. It tells the story of a dystopian future where a bureaucrat, stuck in a fantasy, tries to correct the faulty system his society is controlled under and becomes an enemy of the state. Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan described the film as "the most potent piece of satiric political cinema since Dr. Strangelove". Come dive in and get weird!
As one of the longest continually run cinemas in the country, Clinton Street Theater has been kind enough to offer this showing for free with donation to Sail2Change. Sail2Change is a local nonprofit whose mission is to provide tools for personal growth through alternative outdoor education. They serve high school-aged youth in Portland and the surrounding areas.
