Sail2Change is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve community equity by empowering our nation’s youth through alternative outdoor education. Our goal is to provide tools for personal growth, whilst simultaneously creating an understanding of responsible recreation, resource conservation, and the complexities of the natural world.  We believe that every child has the potential to succeed in life given the appropriate environment and opportunities.

 

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about Sail2Change’s mission and who has a track record of board leadership. Selected board members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or in the nonprofit sector. Their accomplishments will allow them to attract other well-qualified, high-performing board members. 

IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE A VARIETY OF THE FOLLOWING QUALITIES:

-Demonstrates a passion for youth empowerment

-Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of Sail2Change’s beneficiaries 

-Experience executing functions described in Leadership, Governance and Oversight

-Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals

-Prior experience serving on a board of directors, nonprofit experience is an asset

-Sufficient time, and willingness to dedicate that time, to the fulfillment of the duties described

 

The Board will support the work of Sail2Change and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by Sail2Change President, the Board-President relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities include: 

EACH INDIVIDUAL BOARD MEMBER IS EXPECTED TO:

-Know the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and needs

-Serve as an active advocate and ambassador for the organization in public and fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnership necessary for the organization to advance its mission

-Possess diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals

-Meet the time commitment and term requirements; Attending at least 75% of the Board Meetings annually. Meetings are currently held once a month. Committee meetings and work is often 3-7 hours per month

-Represent the diversity of greater Portland area communities in decision making

-Provide advice and counsel, and participate fully in one or more committees

-Possess personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and honesty

-Be aware of and abstain from any conflict of interest

-Place the organization’s needs above one’s own personal business benefit
